Described as the Valley Island in holiday brochures — and derisively called the "haole island" by some locals — Maui is possibly more heavily impacted by tourist development than the other Hawai'ian islands. Originally the site of what was once the most intensively habitated and organized native empire on the archipelago, other than the "World's Largest Heaiu" (a 3 acre temple platform near Hana) little remains of unmistakeably pre-contact stone works. Useful stone abounds, of course, with lava eruptions from Haleakala recorded as recently as the 18th century.
